Dear NYC#25,

The unbuttoned dress shirt is a hard look to pull off. I’d caution you and other men to stay away from it since it usually comes off as sloppy. Your outfit leaves me guessing — maybe you were in a rush and didn’t have time to do up all your buttons. Or maybe you just really wanted to show off your undershirt. Either scenario doesn’t really make sense and that’s why the look doesn’t work.

It can work however. To the right I’ve provided two examples of the unbuttoned dress shirt being successfully executed. Here are some things to think about:

• The look is best with a long-sleeved dress shirt. The sleeves should be rolled up to be consistent with the casualness of the outfit. 
• The undershirt should be worth showing off. It should always be clean and fitted

With a few minor tweaks, it can be done!
